Welded Moment Connection for Small Frame

Welded Moment Connection for Small Frame

Welded Moment Connection for Small Frame

(OP)
Hi folks,

I've recently had to design a small lifting frame that will carry a load of about 3 tonnes. The frame consists of 150x6 SHS columns and a 114x6 CHS beam. I cannot make the columns connections as moment resisting so I need to design the beam to column connections to resist the moment.

Since I'm dealing with hollow sections, I was considering just cutting a hole through the SHS and continuous fillet welding the CHS face to both flanges of the column.

I've designed the weld using the permissible stress method (as outlined in MITcalc's website http://www.mitcalc.com/doc/welding/help/en/welding...) and it works out alright. I feel like I am missing something though. When designing a bolted moment connection, the method is extremely thorough and complex if done by hand.

Have I gone about this the right way or does anyone have some resources for welded moment resisting connections in frames?

Regards,

Keith
