Masonry construction

Masonry construction

Masonry construction

(OP)
Is anyone aware of a corrective action for repairing the face shell of about 10 CMU. I have typically seen the design professional allow the contractor to replace the face without removing the entire block from the middle of a wall. I have researched ACI 530 and the masonry standard and can not find where this is an acceptable fix. Does anyone know where I may find information accepting this correction as a approved fix? The DOR has been released from this project so I have no one to ask.

RE: Masonry construction

I have seen residential contractors remove the entire block. If they are willing to do it than a commercial contractor should.

As for acceptable, it really depends on what is going on.

RE: Masonry construction

If the cells of the block are ungrouted and unreinforced, I can see how removing the block would be possible, still maintaining the structural integrity of the wall.

However, if the cells contain reinforcing, it seems that could be a local problem, particularly if it contains jamb steel or is a bond beam. The integrity of the steel could not be compromised, and the cell(s) would have to be re-grouted, leaving one to two grout holes in each block.
