limits to fillet weld with butt weld procedure

limits to fillet weld with butt weld procedure

limits to fillet weld with butt weld procedure

(OP)
Good Morning

I have a butt weld procedure (asme IX), this procedure let me make fillet weld , my question is: i have limits to make that fillet weld ( diameters, thicknesses )

Thanks

RE: limits to fillet weld with butt weld procedure

AISC 13th Edition on page 4-156 calls out for the maximum size of the fillet weld to be 1/16" less than the thickness of the base metal for base metal thicknesses greater than 1/4". For thicknesses of 1/4" or less, the full thickness of the base metal is OK.

If I rephrased the question like this, would it still be accurate?

"I have a Welding Procedure Specification that was qualified using a groove-weld test. Can I use this Welding Procedure Specification for fillet welds on all thicknesses of base material, on all diameters of pipe?"

If that is a similar question, I would take a look at QW-202.2(c) Qualification of Fillet Welds.

It is important to know the basis if you are allowing work to be performed using that WPS, but the short answer is no, you don't have any limits for thickness or diameter for fillet welds.

Yes.
(c) Qualification for Fillet Welds. WPS qualification for
fillet welds may be made on groove‐weld test coupons
using test specimens specified in (a) or (b). Fillet‐weld
procedures so qualified may be used for welding all
thicknesses of base metal for all sizes of fillet welds,
and all diameters of pipe or tube in accordance with
Table QW-451.4.
