wood deck to CMU connection - offset

wood deck to CMU connection - offset

See attached detail first.

Designing a deck for a shipping container restaurant. The mason didn't set his foundation walls exactly level and I'm suddenly dealing with a 3" gap I have to make up. I had previously planned to ledger the wood joists to the CMU wall and move on, but now as you can tell, the anchors are WAY below the hangers and that's just not cool. I had thought of using an 18" PSL but that's just getting ridiculous and I'm not sure they even make a Parallam Plus (ie treated) version at that depth.

I'm thinking of scrapping the whole wood ledger and using a steel ledger to sit the joists straight on, but I need some help with what steel shape to use and how to connect the wood to the steel.

thanks, folks.

RE: wood deck to CMU connection - offset

Can you seat the joists on top of the ledger? and block/brace the ends similar to floor-trusses? provide Simpson H1 ties at each joist to handle lateral and uplift...?

much better. done, and thanks for the help.

RE: wood deck to CMU connection - offset

@SLTA;
How are you dealing with pull-out?
Your detail is very weak in that direction.

I have changed the detail to the configuration that EngineeringEric suggested, which gave me room for 2 anchors into the CMU vertically staggered and still room for the Simpson H1 on each joist. That combination will handle the pullout. The rest of the deck area is solid. Thanks for the suggestion to check it!

RE: wood deck to CMU connection - offset

Sometimes the solution is rather simple, all you need is a new set of eyes. Glad it worked for you!
