Tolerancing Information

(OP)
I am designing standard parts from spec sheets, and my goal is to add all the tolerance information into the model so that it can be used by downstream applications. My initial approach was to add the tolerance information by clicking on a dimension, going to ->Style, and then later selecting ->Covert to PMI. However, the tolerance dialog box within the Annotation Style window does not allow the ability to link an expression. This makes me skeptical; is adding tolerance information in this way just for display? Do I instead need to use the Geometric Tolerancing tool in order to add sophisticated tolerance information that can be recognized by downstream apps? If so, is there a way to link GDT info to a sketch dimension? Thanks in advance!
