Hi All,

please share your opinion. can UT replace RT for tubes subject to furnace radiant heat with diameter below NPS 4 (DN 100) and thickness below 0.5 in. (13 mm). ASME Section I, 2011, table PW-11, general notes (g), requires thickness below 0.5 in shall be RT, while in the table for tubes requires volumetric examination if OD above NPS 4 and thickness above 0.5 in. I have read code case 2235, year 2005, UT can replace RT for thickness at 13 mm and greater.

second question, If tubes has OD below NPS 4 and thickness is below 0.5 in, is volumetric inspection required?

Thanks...

RE: ASME section 1, table PW-11, interpretation

No, volumetric examination is not required for circumferential welds in boiler tubing based on Table PW-11. If it is invoked by a client or owner/user it is because of workmanship and not a code requirement. Use of UT versus RT for workmanship is based on contractual agreement.
