Expert Systems in Piping Support Design and Stress Analysis

(OP)
Hi All

I'm looking for the experiences of anyone who has used an "expert system" in piping support design and stress analysis. Software such as HANGIT (associated with ADLPIPE) or PSO/ Pipe Support Optimiser (associated with ASGLOBAL) were written in the early 1990s during a period of experimentation with these sort of systems. I find it hard to believe that they were of significant value, but it would fascinating to hear from anyone who ever worked with these pieces of software what advantages they brought to the design and analysis process.

My background is as a piping designer and part time student working on my MSc thesis. I am currently carrying out a literature review of various detailed and simplified stress analysis methods and have noticed that there was a spate of expert system software which was written in the early 90s. Useful information about them is quite difficult to come by, as they aren't really around anymore. However, I know there is a lot of experience available on these forums so it seemed like the obvious place to ask about them.

Thanks!
Jonathan
