Hi All,

I working for a Pressure Vessel Company. My SUrveyor ask me to change my WPS. I have a test Coupon THK 40 mm. My Thickness Range Qualified base metal on my MPS are 16 mm in to 200mm . According to him, I can not use 200mm on my PQR because of QW 407.2. In my PQR Soaking Time for my PQR 2 hours and 30 minute. So I try to run simulation according to UCS 56 ASME VIII 2013.

50 mm 2 hours
25 mm 15 minute
25 mm 15 minute
25 mm 15 minute
25 mm 15 minute
25 mm 15 minute
25 mm 15 minute
200 3 hours 30 minute

now in my PQR Soaking Time only 2 hours and 30 minute. SO based on This am i need to Change my WPS to
50 mm 2 hours
25 mm 15 minute
25 mm 15 minute
100 mm 2 hours 30 minute
SO in my WPS maximum 100 mm

Is it my calculation Correct ?

2. my other trials I check random and took 150mm, means 3 hour :

50 mm 2 hours
25 mm 15 minute
25 mm 15 minute
25 mm 15 minute
25 mm 15 minute
150 mm 3 hours

so 80 % from this are 2.4 hours and my PQR only 2.5 hours so I am thinking My WPS should be 150 mm(6 in) Max ?

much appreciate to anyone help me to solve my problem ?

Thank s n Regard

RE: QW 407.2 ASME IX 2013 80% From Production

As you have PQR with 2 hrs 30 min (150 min), then you can go for WPS until 3 hrs 7.5 min (187.5 min).
This equals to 162.5 mm.

Hi Aburafdi,

Thankyou for the answer. 150/.8 = 187.5, But would you please explain how you get 162.5 please ?

Table UCS 56 more than 5 in :
125 2 hr
150 15min
175 15min
200 15min
Please see simulation above, if The Thk is 162.5 the value between 150mm(2 hrs 15 min) and 175mm(2 hrs 30 min) ?
WOuld you please be specific ? much appreciate for your help

Thanks n Regards

RE: QW 407.2 ASME IX 2013 80% From Production

UCS-56 states 2 hrs plus 15 min for each additional inch over 2".

SO.....

187.5 minutes extrapolated soak time based on 2.5 hour aggregate PWHT

187.5 - 120 mins for the 2 hrs = 67.5 mins
4" x 15 mins per inch = 60 minutes
67.5 - 60 minutes = 7.5 minutes

This means you have 6 inches with 7.5 minutes to spare.
As 7.5 is 1/2 of 15 mins = .500"

so total thickness = 6.5"

In your case, time at temperature for PWHT is only an essential variable if impact testing is required.
