Export a Polygon Body from NX

Export a Polygon Body from NX

Export a Polygon Body from NX

(OP)
I am also looking for an answer to this thread:

http://www.eng-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=336751

I used the "Face from Mesh" command in a NX .fem to create a polygon body. I want to export that body as a parasolid or .prt or other format so that i can use it in CAD.

Is there any way to export a polygon body from the fem?

Under File, Export, there is a "Parasolid" option, but it is greyed out. It seems to only recognize Sheet or Solid Bodies that originated from the CAD i.part or part, but not the Polygon Body from "Face from mesh"

Seems like there should definitely be a way to export this polygon body since it would be really useful to bring into cad and modify.

Thanks.

RE: Export a Polygon Body from NX

You can export the polygon bodies to a JT file. You can then open this file in CAD, but it will be next to impossible to modify. If you have a shape studio license, there are some tools to help recreate the shape into something usable, but it is not a simple or fast process.

RE: Export a Polygon Body from NX

Actually it is possible since NX 8.5 Here is how to do it.

Creating sheet bodies from polygon faces

Use the Insert→Model Preparation→Surface→From Polygon Face command to create a trimmed N-sided surface or bounded plane from polygon faces from the FEM.

This command is only available when the FEM is the displayed part and the CAD model is the work part:

If the FEM is associated with both an idealized part and a master part, you can create surfaces only in the idealized part.

If the FEM is associated directly to the master part (there is no idealized part), you can create surfaces in the master part.

For more information about setting the work and displayed part in Advanced Simulation, see FE model in context.

You can use this command, for example, to create CAD geometry from polygon faces extracted from mesh data using the Face from Mesh command.

The From Polygon Face command extracts edge information from the polygon face and uses that to create a sheet body as a trimmed N-sided surface. When creating a surface from a polygon face, the same limitations apply as when creating an N-sided surface. From Polygon Face does not consider interior points, and you cannot create a surface from a polygon face that contains holes or interior loops. For more information about N-sided surfaces in Modeling, see N-Sided Surface in the Modeling online Help.
