What is the design (safety) factor for FRP tanks subject to transient environmental loads? ASME RTP-1 says to use 5.0 but this particular tank does not need to comply with RTP-1. It need only comply with ASTM D3299, but that standard does not address environmental loads. I am being told by the manufacturer that the industry standard is to use a design factor 3.0 but no one can produce a standard stating that 3.0 is permitted. Thoughts?

What are 'transient environmental loads?'

EN 13923 requires a minimum design factor of 4.0 made up of the product of the minimum safety factor of 2.0 and all other partial design factors pertaining to exposure and loading.

Thanks SJones for your reply. By transient environmental loads I meant wind and seismic.

Thanks for the clarification. Such loading is not accounted for in the EN partial design factors. The moment of wind loading is incorporated in stress calculations. It has a partial design factor , A2 for 'vessel liquid and environment,' but that would not appear to be pertinent to wind and seismic loading; more to material ageing.
