Dear All,

Which welding process can use for welding weldolet to pipe

pipe 16'' 16 mm thickness

weldolet 20 mm (2'')

GTAW or GTAW + SMAW ?

RE: best process of welding

Any of the three you stated. Which is best - that answer depends on more information than you have provided.

RE: best process of welding

Indoors - fab shop = GTAW [at 20mm, too small to be worth switching processes]

Outdoors - in an enclosed area [little or no breeze] same

Outdoors & breezy - SMAW; E6010 root [and ensure that the root is Full-Pennetration]; remainder E7018 [better quality of weld metal than 6010]

in strength wise and qualityu wise pls consider

RE: best process of welding

metengr's comment still applies.

i question is which is the most suitable one?

My question is which is the most suitable one?

RE: best process of welding

Duwe6 has given you that answer, except that I would never even attempt to do GTAW outdoors. So the answer is GTAW indoors, SMAW outdoors.

RE: best process of welding

Guys,
You have all tried to answer what IMHO is a ridiculous question.
The OP has not asked whether GTAW or SMAW are the preferred options (that may be a valid question) - he has asked whether GTAW or GTAW/SMAW are the "most suitable" options.

metengr has given what I feel is the only answer applicable to the OP's question,
Cheers,
DD

RE: best process of welding

Once you put a GTAW root & hot-pass on a 2" o'let, it is faster & cheaper to finish GTAW. Only time that GTAW + SMAW would be cheaper or faster would be on an assembly-line set up. Neither is "better" than the other if the welders are equally skilled and if a premium SMAW filler rod is purchased. The current favorite for Power Plant, Nuke, and Petrochem is ESAB's AtomArc E7018.

Low-grade SMAW rods leave porosity and are prone to slag inclusions, so they are no bargain.
