british standard for structural design?

british standard for structural design?

british standard for structural design?

(OP)
Hi

I'm designing a framework for a machine. It's a welded frame that's made up of standard hollow sections and plates. I'm using (basic) FEA to check the stresses/deflections on the framework. I'd like to work to a british standard that defines the safety factors etc that I should be working to.

Any thoughts on which standards would be applicable to this type of work?

Thanks
Graham

RE: british standard for structural design?

As a place to start would be EN 1990 - Basis of Structural Design and BS EN 1993-1-1 - General Rules and Rules for Buildings.

RE: british standard for structural design?

I have been designing machines and machine frames for over 30 years in the US. Unlike buildings and infrastructure, I know of no governmental standards for the allowable stresses or analysis procedures for such work. Admittedly almost none of my work has been directly for the government or government projects, so some standards may apply there of which I am not aware. When you think about it though it would be extremely difficult to compile and apply any such standards in a realistic manner because of the wide variations in loading scenarios, life cycles, and other requirements that machine frames will see. That's for the US. Now as far as the EU, those people have a whole different frame of mind over there and seem to believe that if it can be done it must be controlled. So I would not be surprised to see the standards you seek over there.

RE: british standard for structural design?

BS 7608 : 1993 - Fatigue design and assessment of steel structures.
