Hydrogen stress cracking

Hydrogen stress cracking

(OP)
Folks,

I have been interested in hydrogen stress cracking and material selection. I have read the following page,

http://corrosion-doctors.org/Forms-HIC/embrittleme...

Do you have any other interesting references? This page suggests that atomic hydrogen may be the cause. I wonder if this kind of cracking does not occur if the pipe is strictly carrying molecular hydrogen. What do you think, and do you have a reference?

Thanks so much for the help.

Fantastic book. Clearly states that hydrogen gas can cause stress fractures, page 32. The standard will also be helpful for designing the system.

RE: Hydrogen stress cracking

There are about 20 common names for the same failure mechanism; and I guess 20 books, and the NACE MR 01-75.
