Allwable stresses for FEA for design code ASME section VIII - Div 1

Allwable stresses for FEA for design code ASME section VIII - Div 1

Allwable stresses for FEA for design code ASME section VIII - Div 1

(OP)
We are in process of providing calculations for a pressure vessel details as below

Dia = 2500 mm
Design Pressure = 10 bar
Design Temp = 150 Deg C
CA = 3
MOC = SA 516 Gr. 60
Radiography = Spot
Joint Efficiency = 0.85
Design code = ASME section VIII Div 1

A nozzle had to be analyzed using FEA methods for the same. Hence I put forth the following queries.
• Kindly advice if the allowable stresses need to be considered as per ASME section VIII – Div 1 or Div 2 for the above case.
• Had this vessel been in cyclic service & and a fatigue analysis is needed. What would be the Design code in that case section VIII- Div 1 or 2.

RE: Allwable stresses for FEA for design code ASME section VIII - Div 1

Normally you would stay with the design code for allowables and everything else that's specified in it, and go to Div.2 only for methods (fatigue, stress classification).

As luck would have it, I wrote a blog post on this exact topic in September of 2013. http://becht.com/blog/performing-an-fea-in-section...
