Hi,

May someone help me whit these composed question:

Why and for what to do a welding map?.

Are there some standar or text of reference about the elaboration of welding maps. I´m familiarized with the welding maps for piping systems but, is these a often practices for structural steel constructions??

Welding maps are used to track location, size (length and depth) and welder ID associated with repair welds. Weld maps, if done correctly, can be of tremendous help in the event problems develop with quality issues or service-related issues.

Weld maps should be part of your Quality Assurance program if you fabricate critical components or repair critical components, or the client requests it.

A weld map with WPS, welder, and NDE is not often done for structural steel welding in the field. The drawings do establish weld type and sizes.

Being a welding inspector myself with a specialty in structural steel - I can tell you that all of the capital projects we do ( Mostly power plant maintenance/EPA mandated system retrofits ) require that we track all of our welding - be it structural or pressure welds. Obviously we have engineered drawings that we are building everything to on new projects, so I just write the welders I.D number and the date I accepted said weld , right on the prints themselves.

When ever we do boiler outages and I am keeping track of pressure welds, I use a microsoft excel sreadsheet with the tube number or element number - who rooted/flushed/capped the weld , welder I.D's and the date I accepted it. Also when it was NDE'd ( more often than not x-ray'd) and if it passed or was rejected and then repaired and re-xrayed.
