How best to determine whether a pipe is austenitic 316 grade or dual stamped 316/316L
How best to determine whether a pipe is austenitic 316 grade or dual stamped 316/316L
(OP)
can spectrometry determine the difference between Austenitic 316 and dual stamped 316/316L
the difference is primarily in the Carbon content so is there a Portable spectrometer for on-site metal analysis capable of determining this difference with accuracy.

In reality you will need both chemistry and mechanical (tensile) tests.
Get the testing done in a real lab.
If the C is over 0.30, up to 0.80, then it is 316.
If it 0.30 or less, then it could be 316L or dual grade, depending on the strength.
