Thread length in full thread screw

Thread length in full thread screw

Thread length in full thread screw

(OP)

I am creating hardware library of full thread screw customer requested to model should be upside down i, e shank and head should be in inverted T-Shape. Template model is completed and I created child parts everything went smooth until I figure it out that thread length is not updating in the child parts. I check the template part in thread dialogue box length was not linked to the expression (earlier I linked) once again I linked o he shank length since this screw is full thread screw. After that once again I clicked on the threads and the thread length expression was no associated which I already earlier fixed it. Need help on how to fix this issue.

RE: Thread length in full thread screw

Hi I have created some parts like you describe using excel and part families. I assume this is your approach?

In my experience part families are relatively stable IF you create everything correct from the start and plan the expressions through. If the thread is causing you issues maybe the solution is to create a brand new 'user' expression for the length (specified something like T_LENGTH=SHANK_LENGTH) and type that expression into the feature parameters of the thread to drive it.
I also set up revision control on the part family so that when something goes wrong I can re-run the children anew with separate revs.

Hi Rob, I am not sure whats wrong with this part. I just as you told and is working again I edited the thread issue is remains same, lenght is not linked to expression. How did set up rev control for hardware??
I am using NX-6 intigrated with TCE

RE: Thread length in full thread screw

For revision control it is just a matter of setting up DB_PART_REV as a linked column item and editing it every time as you need to.

As a work-around may be worth seeing if you can achieve what you need using the deform command. Thus the same part can have the length adapted to a specific assembly condition. I don't know how the thread command would peform within the deform process though. I don't tend to use the deform command so much as I usually need separate parts and then the deform option is a bit messy.

As a final thought you could just do a simple extrude (avoid thread altogether) and split the surface of the screw shank cylinder to simulate a thread. This worked very well in the days when the threads used to take up huge CPU time to display. At the end all you need is a visualisation of the thread in 2D, anyway a fully cut thread on a drawing tends to look a mess.

Good Luck!
