ARV - Automatic Recirculat ion Valve

ARV - Automatic Recirculat ion Valve

ARV - Automatic Recirculat ion Valve

Dear Gents,

Can anyone tell me what is disadvantage of using ARV especially for large pumps? for example pump with discharge nozzle 18", capacity 1525 m3/hr, head 56.45 m, service is HOT WATER CIRCULATION PUMP.

Since my end user refuse to use ARV for big pumps

Really appreciate for your help
Thank you

RE: ARV - Automatic Recirculat ion Valve

Disadvantage is cost of the valve and recirc piping. If the pump will not be run at low flow rates, and the discharge head is relatively small, one could argue that they are not required. Will the pump need to run at lower than 1525 m3/h? Or will it need to run at less than 300-400 m3/h for more than 5 minute?. If not, recirculation may not be necessary at all.

What was your reason for including it?

RE: ARV - Automatic Recirculat ion Valve

The issue might be that the client has an issue with the amount of heat generated by an ARV if it goes straight back to the pump inlet and not via a cooler or into a large sump tank. For big pumps any recirc system will heat up a lot faster than a smaller one. However I agree with BI - first work out if an ARV is actually required or not.

Dear BI and LI,

thank you verymuch for your response and explanation

After check to the Process Engineer,
this pump need ARV because its located inside Hull (we are working on a vessel). Therefore, available space is limited. The ARV has been provided at each pump discharge. And also Hot Water system pressure control valve, has been provided. When instrument air is available, the pump minimum flow can be managed by that control valve. ARV works only for abnormal/limited condition.
