Sockolet For Hot Tap Use - B31.1

Sockolet For Hot Tap Use - B31.1

Sockolet For Hot Tap Use - B31.1

(OP)
Good afternoon,

I have read many opinions, suggestions, and importantly references to codes while doing much searching on this subject. I am anxious to hear input and advice on a specific scenario as I don't feel like I've found a concrete answer.

I am attempting to evaluate whether a sockolet can be used for a hot tap. B31.1 is the applicable code. The header pipe is 14" A106, .375" wall. The thickness has been verified by NDE. The tap to be made is 1.5", and can be socketweld or threaded. In researching I have found that this is not only an odd size to use saddles and the like, but also have gotten feedback from various suppliers that a sockolet would be the best option. This would be considered a Service Water system, with operating conditions of 100F and 125psi.

So, is a sockolet acceptable for this hot-tap? Yes or no and why? If not, what would be recommended?

Thank you all in advance for your feedback.

RE: Sockolet For Hot Tap Use - B31.1

Actually I'd make a slightly larger diameter hot tap and use a reinforcing saddle, then a reducer farther out to get you back to the 1" diameter. Personally I'd rather not use a socket and I generally feel that a small pipe tapped onto a large header is an invitation for stress concentrations, flow induced vibration, mechanical damage and fatigue. Something more proportionally appeasing would be nice.

Learn from the mistakes of others. You don't have time to make them all yourself.
