ASME IX QW-200.4

ASME IX QW-200.4

ASME IX QW-200.4

(OP)
I have two separate WPSs one for FCAW and one for GTAW. The base metal range for FCAW is 1/8" - 1" and the GTAW range is .0625" - .308".
I will be welding 1" thick P1 material and would like to run a GTAW root pass and several more before switching to FCAW for the fill and cap passes.
Am I allowed to use these two separate processes from two separate WPSs in the same joint if all essential variables are met?

Seeking advice

Yes.

metengr,
With all due respect the answer is no.

Interpretation: IX-83-80
Subject: Section IX, QW-200.4
Date Issued: September 19, 1983
File: BC83-388
Question: Do the requirements of Section IX allow the welding of combined production joints
when the individual processes are qualified separately but one process has a qualified base metal
maximum thickness less than the production base metal thickness?
Reply: No. See QW-200.4.

(b) For GTAW, SMAW, GMAW, PAW, and SAW,
or combinations of these processes, a PQR for a process
recording a test coupon that was at least 1⁄2 in. (13 mm)
thick may be combined with one or more other PQRs
recording another welding process and any greater base
metal thickness. In this case, the process recorded on the
first PQR may be used to deposit the root layers using
the process(es) recorded on that PQR up to 2t (for shortcircuiting
type of GMAW, see QW-404.32) in thickness
on base metal of the maximum thickness qualified by the
other PQR(s) used to support the WPS. The requirements
of Note (1) of tables QW-451.1 and QW-451.2 shall apply.

As per QW200.4(b) the GTAW PQR must be 1/2" thick or more

DD

Thank you all for the feedback, DekDee your response was very clear and to the point.

RE: ASME IX QW-200.4

Good catch DekDee, I did not read completely through the OP regarding the coupon thickness for GTAW.

RE: ASME IX QW-200.4

Can someone interpret this interpretation? I always thought it was quite clear as dekdee has stated but thought this was strange.....

Interpretation: IX-92-75
Subject: Date Issued: File No:
QW-200.4(b), Combination of Welding Procedures September 22, 1993
93-490
Question: When writing multi-process welding procedures per QW-200.4(a), where the tube wall thickness is less than 1 in., using a separate qualification for the root deposit only, must the root deposit qualification coupon be 1⁄2 in. minimum thickness as stated in QW-200.4(b)?
Reply: No.

RE: ASME IX QW-200.4

jimmy,
As per QW 200.4(b)if I weld a 1/2" thick GTAW PQR I can then combine with a 1" thick FCAW PQR and write a GTAW/FCAW WPS for 2" thick parent material.

The important part of the interpretaion you have listed is "where the tube wall thickness is less than 1 in.,"
This clause (QW 200.4(b)) only comes in to play for base metal thicknesses greater or equal to 1"
Any GTAW PQR less than 1/2" thick can be used to deposit root layers in combination with any other process as long as the limitations of QW 451 are complied with.

Hope that helps,
Cheers,
DD

Nice job!

Still in Thailand?

Hi Al,
Shot back to Malaysia for 3 weeks to help finish the MDR.
Had to escape from the wifes latest landscaping project. LOL !!
Hope all is well for you,

It is a beautiful time of year! Spring time, it is my favorite season. Everything is fresh and green. The nights are cool and the days are warm. I love it.

Take care my friend!
