Floor Deck and Beam Identification

Floor Deck and Beam Identification

Floor Deck and Beam Identification

(OP)
Greetings

I was asked to find the load capacity of an existing mezzanine within an industrial shop building that was originally constructed in ~1973. There is essentially a room constructed of 8" concrete (10'-0" tall, 8'-0" floor to u/s joist) block walls within this warehouse that has 24"deep joists @ 4'-0" o.c. spanning 28'-8" across from wall to wall. I believe the beams are Armco 24J11 which I have determined from site measurements of the top and bottom chords and referenced to their 1974 catalog on slideruleera.net.

My problem is that I cant identify the steel decking which I believe will be the limiting element in the load capacity. The decking spans the 4'-0" between the joists and is 2'-0" from rib to rib profile. From what I can see on site there is no concrete on this deck, only a plywood floor that is somehow screwed on top. I have approximated that there is a 1.5" space that is occupied by this unknown decking, and I assume some sort of wood strapping to secure the plywood floor on top.

I have attached a photo shot from within the ceiling plenum. Any information would be much appreciated!

Cheers

Not much to go on. Are you sure that this is a wood deck?
Kind of looks like bulb tees spanning between the joists. Could be Tectum or some other similar product.

RE: Floor Deck and Beam Identification

Hard to tell from the picture, but it almost looks like a type of gyp deck.

RE: Floor Deck and Beam Identification

What was specified on the original drawings of the building? If there are no drawings, remove enough plywood to allow inspection of the deck below.

Anything you learn here would be purely speculative and insufficient to ascertain deck capacity.

That's the thing.. there is no wall sections or mention of roof construction on the original drawings.

I had spent some time today looking through old steel decking catalogs to try and locate a manufacturer or similar profile with no success. The steel is pretty thin gauge, similar to siding.

RE: Floor Deck and Beam Identification

I feel like there is no depth to that decking so it really can't do much. Robertson decking was big in So Cal in the 70's so I always look there first. The acoustical decks actually fit your profile, look at DC or ADC Robertson decks. Not sure if it is Robertson as even modern acoustical decks look very similar from below.
