Interesting news article from Japan, method for extending life of concrete

Interesting news article from Japan, method for extending life of concrete

RE: Interesting news article from Japan, method for extending life of concrete

"Keeping the concrete wrapped over the course of six months reduces the volume of gaps by 75%, and Shimizu claims that this can prolong the life of the material to around 1,000 years."

I do not see how this is reasonable or feasible considering this would have to be done to every CIP pour sequence for the whole structure, including the foundation.

Perhaps more feasible in precast construction.

That was my thought, as well, Mike, but I'm wondering if a spray applied sealant after de-forming might accomplish the same thing. That would help with cast-in-place jobs. I wonder if it's imperative to remove the wrap after the 6 month time period or if it could be left in place indefinitely.

Interesting bit, though.

And I guess that if this had been known 1000 yrs ago, we would be living in structures designed in 1014 AD. I wonder how the real estate ad would read.

Roman concrete goes back ~2000 years, but it's a different formulation, and has less strength than Portland based concrete.

We have found adding Crystalline Waterproofing products to concrete will enhance the life span.

Speculation.
Good quality concrete mixes, good placement techniques and good design will allow concrete to last long beyond the expected useful life of the structure.....which gets lower as time goes on because of societal changes.
