Hi all,

We already have a ANSYS Mechanical license. And I am currently using ansys to do analysis works. But I am still evaluating abaqus as a alternative.

I have heard a lot that abaqus is better that ansys on so called nonlinear problems and easier to get convergence. But I have never got a exact example to show this.

So could your guys who are familar with both abaqus and ansys to give me a exact example to show that abaqus is better than ansys ?

First, for full disclosure I own an Abaqus VAR (value added reseller) company, Optimal Device.

I have used both Abaqus and Ansys and they are both capable codes each with their respective strong suits. In the right hands both codes can produce good results but in unskilled hands both will only create pretty pictures. That being said here are 3 suggestions.

1. A demonstration or trial is usually the best bet but if you are already skilled in 1 code your perception will be skewed.

2. There are many types of non-linearity: deformation, material, contact and others. I suggest outlining the most difficult problem that you wante to model. From here utilize internal or external experts to do the benchmark.

3. You can also check out presentations at each of their user's conferences or marketing resources to gauge their current state of the art.

Your question seems very obscure; so, someone comes up with an obscure problem that demonstrates Abaqus' superiority on that problem, but it's silicon micromachined sensors that have zero bearing on what you do. How is that going to sway your decision?

rstupplebeen do you speak of ansys classic or workbench?

I have used both and each had their up side. Classic being the scripting language and workbench CAD associativity. It has been a while since I actively used either and my guess is that there have been improvements at least for workbench. I hope this helps.

Thanks for all your suggestion.

Maybe I could find a nonlinear example from abaqus's tutorial and analyze it in ansys and compare the result to see which is more reliable. May be rubber with contact is a good example.

you don't have anything to compare them against.
anyway, a company near me, that is involved with rubber, uses Marc - Mentat.
