Design a rupture disc

Design a rupture disc

Design a rupture disc

Hi.
Is it feasible for a one-off application to design your own rupture disk to be installed in a pipeline?
They are commercially available, but can you do this and how? The shapes I have seen for the diaphragm is flat and dished, both secured by a robust housing so that the disk can be replaced after failure. Materials of construction and method of design unknown to me.
Thanks, MikeG7

Then there is material certification, full scale testing, peformance confidence, corrosion protection, pressure cycling fatigue risk and the probability that the survival of your plant will depend on this component.

I would recommend going to a recognised ASME or similar certified supplier.

RE: Design a rupture disc

Rupture Disks are Code-stamped items, just like pressure relief valves. To make a R/D for overpressure protection, you would need to obtain the Stamp.

That's what I was thinking, just wanted some confirmation. It's not feasible...

RE: Design a rupture disc

Why you would want a rupture disk in a pipeline is beyond me. Pressure vessel / HX yes, pipeline no.

My motto: Learn something new every day

Also: There's usually a good reason why everyone does it that way

RE: Design a rupture disc

The rupture disc manufacturers go thru a "proving" process during manufacture, they make a number of discs slightly different and burst them. I'd think it difficult to make your own.

Mike
