Tapping Return Line for Chilled Water

Tapping Return Line for Chilled Water

Tapping Return Line for Chilled Water

(OP)
Hi all

I have a question. Plant "B" has just been completed and we are now connecting new chilled water pipes (return and supply). Chilled water for each plant is supplied from a central chiller plant.

For supply line, there is no issue, however, for return chilled water line from Plant "B", it will connect to an existing return pipeline from Plant "A". Individual return line is not possible because the chilled water is closed system. Plant "A" is located higher therefore I am afraid that the return chilled water from plant "B" cannot flow due to higher pressure in return pipeline from Plant "A". Will this be a real problem? I hope my worry is legit.

Please help.

Best regards

RE: Tapping Return Line for Chilled Water

If it is a closed system then the system pressure will need to sufficient to be above the head difference between the chiller plant and plant A. Therefore there should be no problem so long as plant B is not on a separate system but actually exist at a higher static pressure in a common system. The circulation pumps then just need to overcome friction and not hydrostatic head, which is undertaken by the static head pressure.

My motto: Learn something new every day

Also: There's usually a good reason why everyone does it that way
