Dear Colleagues,

For a parking area,
Can we place 75 mm Cold recycled Asphalt on Stiff well compacted soil (made of Class 3 backfill), without placing of the standard Roadbase layer?

If roadbase layer is a Must, what would be minimum thickness in such case?

Regards,

It might depend on the type of soil... asphalt pavements generally include the base as part of the design.

fcu45...it also depends on what you are parking and how frequent the use of the lot is. Keep in mind that parking lots create a lot of turning and shoving movements on the asphalt, so that places stress on the interface between the surface and the soil beneath. Also, not having a competent base material will allow more deflection of the asphalt under load and lead to early cracking, rutting and potholes.

Good compaction does not necessarily mean good stability.

As for the thickness of the base material if you need one (and in my opinion, you do), it will depend on the strength design of your pavement but generally 6 inches is minimum with a CBR of at least 80, and compacted to 98 percent of the modified Procter maximum dry density.

Asphault is very permeable, so even if you don't need a base for support you need one for drainage.

Recycled asphaltic pavement does not compact nearly as well as original hot materials. Thus, it is even weaker than original asphaltic concrete. I'd compare it to a compacted base course layer, rather thin..
