I have a situation where I must make a beam splice that requires the full section strength of the beam (CJP). The beam is a built up member with a flange thickness of 1.5" and a web thickness of 3/4". I am aware of the qualified welding requirements in AWS for this type of joint.

My question is:

1.) Do AWS or AISC require any sort of splice offset for the flange and web?
2.) Does the joint have to be a double bevel on both sides of the web?
3.) Are the weld access holes for beam copes required for splices as well?

You don't say if this is a shop or a field splice.

I don't know of any requirement to stagger the joints but I could be out-of-date. The ones that I have been involved with were thicker plates than yours but we used single side joints for the flanges without ratholes because we could turn the girder over so both flanges had down hand welds. If you used two sided welds, or inside full pen welds for the flanges, you need the ratholes in the web to complete the weld. Honestly, you could have worked this last out with some thought.

Since this is a built-up beam, why not splice the two flg. pls. and the web pls. as single (independent) members, in the flat, and then make up the beam member with fillet welds btwn. the completed (spliced) web pl. to the completed (spliced) flg. pls.? Just as you would build any plate girder or built-up beam member. Several different weld details are qualified for these types of spice welds. If you want full penetration splice welds you would start the weld on one side, then back gouge the root area from the other side and continue welding from both sides. This approach eliminates the difficult, discontinuous, welding condition in the ‘k’ region (the fillet radius region) btwn. the flgs. and the web. These welds can also be cleanly done, with run-out tabs, edges ground and cleaned up, etc. and NDT’ed for good QC.
