Reusable object types

Reusable object types

Reusable object types

(OP)
Greetings all!

In NX9 there are six different types of reusable objects:
Face
Body
Feature
2D Section
General
Part (a recent addition in NX9)

I found it somewhat difficult to understand the implied functionality of each (except for 2D section, which is rather obvious), and NX help is not very helpful on this one.
Could somebody please give a brief description of each type, and what is each one's preferred way of using? I believe John would be very helpful here!

Also, is reusable object (of whatever type) is intended to replace UDF feature completely, or is there still some functionality in UDF which is not covered by the reusable objects?

Thanks in advance!

RE: Reusable object types

If you're talking about 'Define Reusable Object'; yes, this is basically the go-forward solution for what we've referred to as UDF's (User Defined Features) in the past. While we've not yet obsoleted UDF's this is the direction that we recommend that users go who wish to capture and 'Reuse' design content from existing models. As for the 'Types' mentioned, just think about each one and what you might want to 'harvest' 'features' from an existing model that you might wish to reuse in some other model which while you could do a simple 'Copy & Paste' this approach will allow you to collect several of these 'objects' in a sort of library and use them whenever needed. Note that we've provided with a normal install of NX a 'Reuse Library' titled 'Reusable Object Library (Example Only)' which you should peruse so as to see how features could be collected and reused.

Hello John!

While some types are more or less self-descripting, I don't particulaliry understand the difference between "feature" and "general" types of the reusable object. What is "general" type intended for? Is it just a generic type which supports everything all other types support separately? Or something else?

RE: Reusable object types

You can get a hint as to what is covered for each 'Type' by looking at the 'Selection Filter' items. In reality, the 'General' item ask sort of like a 'Copy & Paste' where you 'Copy' something into the library that you can later 'Paste' into your model.

Thank you, John!

It's becoming more clear now.
