AISC 14th Edition Compression Design
AISC 14th Edition Compression Design
(OP)
Hello everyone.
I had a question regarding single-angle compression design as per AISC 14th edition.
For the calculation of Kl/r, do we use the minimum value of rx and ry only or the minimum of rx, ry and rz?
It does not seem to be clearly defined. Searching through previous threads and older editions of the manual, the AISC 9th edition has an example on
page 3-55 which uses rz, but I'm not sure if that's a reliable enough reference.
Intuitively, the major and and minor axes do see the minimum and maximum stresses so rz should be used, but I'm not sure.
There seems to be more clarity regarding flexure design for single-angles but not compression.
The angles will be used as X-bracing for wind loading.

Glad to see AISC updated it with this specific addition.

Also, see tables 4-11 and 4-12.
