In the thread above it was mentioned that for VSR to do anything " the material must have ductility for the process to be effective. "
Would 8000 lb grinding tires cast from ( ~zeero ductiity) Nihard4 be receptive to VSR when new, and especially after being weld overlayed with zero ductility wear resistant materials?

If they can get sufficient excitation then it may help. The average stress level would not come down, but the peaks will.
Have you used any thermal stress relief?

Yeah, we are pretty familiar with thermal stress relief on other materials.
This official sounding document tells some curious tales of the various flavors of NIHArd and NiHard 4 in particular.

We are doing premium and conventional weld overlay on big castings to salvage worn tires and improve service life. There are somewhat well deserved concerns of the tires cracking after being re-installed on the interference fitted hubs.
Thermal stress relief after processing is pretty much out of the question for a couple of reasons, and not surprisingly VSR came up.
Thoughtful sounding VSR advocate bklauba's comment that "the material must have ductility for the process to be effective" would be a deal breaker even as an experiment, as the ductility of the overlays and NiHards is pretty much NIL.

I am sorry I did not respond before; been busy with many matters including VSR apps.
The lack of ductility, both of the parent material and the overlay, makes if a tough app at best. Reviewing the image, is item 12 the candidate workpiece? Can you supply approximate dimensions, hardness and strength specs for both materials? Also an idea of your location / region, to see if there is a local VSR service provider.
