Wind Classification for A building With Partially Open and Enclosed Stories

Wind Classification for A building With Partially Open and Enclosed Stories

Wind Classification for A building With Partially Open and Enclosed Stories

(OP)
This is a fairly common problem, so I'm assuming the answer is straight forward. I have a project with a duplex over a parking area below. The parking area has one open side, for vehicle access. Picture two normal looking condo units stacked one over the other, and then this assembly placed over a big wind sock on the lower level.

I will run my lateral design using the 3 sided box method for wood diaphragms and shearwalls to account for the missing lower level wall on the one side.

My question is this: If part of my building is the "enclosed" classification, and another level is "partially enclosed" per the ASCE 7-10 section 26.2, do I design each level for its own classification and respective wind design pressures?

I tried finding the answer on the ENGtips, but most of the discussions on enclosure classification center around hanger design. Any tips would be appreciated.

If there is no opening in the roof of the garage leading into the first unit, then I would only treat the garage portion as open. When you mentioned applying the "three-sided method" I assume you are applying that to the whole structure(garage, unit 1 & 2) as there is no lateral support @ the bottom for that whole wall.

I'm referring to the NDS 4.2.5.1.1, "Open Front Structures"
