ASME VIII Div. 1 or ASME I

ASME VIII Div. 1 or ASME I

ASME VIII Div. 1 or ASME I

We are manufacturing a steam drum (a pressure vessel so named by our costumer). This vessel is not subjected to fire or any other heating source. This vessel have to be calculated and manufactured according ASME I or ASME VIII Div. 1?

Many thanks in advance

What does the designer or engineer of record require?

RE: ASME VIII Div. 1 or ASME I

Unfired steam drums are normally designed and manufactured per ASME VIII, Div. 1, unless, of course, they are integral to a fired boiler or HRSG and are under ASME I.

RE: ASME VIII Div. 1 or ASME I

I agree with weldstan's observation, and would push you towards VIII-1 primarily since in my experience I run into more people with VIII experience than with Section I experience.

The code basis for choosing either Section I or Section VIII Div. 1 is in VIII Div. 1 U-1(g). For relief requirements, be sure to read the last part of UG-125(a).

What means integral to a fired boiler? Our vessel will be connected by welding some nozzles to piping according B31.1 which is "S" stamped, so I think I have to design and manufacture according ASME I? I know a lot of programs according ASME VIII Div. 1 (& 2), but none according ASME I!

Can I design according ASME VIII Div. 1 (I know it is more stringent than ASME I), manufacture and stamp according to S Stamp (ASME I)

Many tahnks in advance

There is a Code Case to allow a drum to be designed to Section VIII, Div 1 rules but is under all of the rules for Section I, and is stamped as Section I.

The code case is 1855-1 Section VIII, Division 1, Unfired Steam Boiler in Section I System
