Class 3 cold-formed U-section EC3

Class 3 cold-formed U-section EC3

Class 3 cold-formed U-section EC3

(OP)
Hello, everybody!
I am designing roof beams (purlins), according to Eurocode 3. I chose cold-formed U-section - 140x60x4. Should I use EN 1993-1-3 for this section, or I can use the simpler procedure in EN 1993-1-1, because the section is class 3 when calculated, according to Table 5.2 in 1993-1-1. Is table 5.2 appropriate for hot-rolled and welded sections only, or it could be used for cold-formed also?

Best regards,

Stoyan Andreev

From designtoeurocodes, "Has I see it, if you have class 3 cold-formed you should use 1993-1-1 provisions with 1993-1-3 material specifications and particularities (e.g. hardening) - see 3.2.2. "

RE: Class 3 cold-formed U-section EC3

and another:

"First of all cold-formed U-section is not much used as purlins, I would rather prefer Cee-sections, Zed-sections or even better Sigma-sections (I'm currently working on these sections as purlins in a portal frame, I can help with the design if needed). I agree with dlnunes, if the section is class 3 then he should use Eurocode 3 part 1-1 (i.e table 5.2) while bearing in mind any further specification in the Eurocode 3 part 1-3. "
