Beam Thermal Analysis

Beam Thermal Analysis

Beam Thermal Analysis

(OP)
Hi,

I would like to do a couple thermal-displacement analysis of a simple structure using a beam or a truss. Abaqus is complaining as reported in the image I am enclosing. Can anyone please help? Is it possibile to do a thermal analysis with surface heat flux loads using the B21 or T2D elements types?

Thanks in advance.

Best regards.

Ale N.

RE: Beam Thermal Analysis

There is no need to do a coupled temperature displacement analysis. Run a thermal model first and then read the temperatures into the structural model in the loads section.
There may be a problem with surface heat flux for a 1D element as there is no surface to apply the load. Instead you could apply a body heat flux equivalent to the surface heat flux multiplied by the surface area divided by the volume.

Sorry, I have not fully understood your answer. How could I for example heat just the upper surface with the body heat flux load?

Best regards.

RE: Beam Thermal Analysis

There is no upper surface on a 'line' element. If you wanted to correctly model a heat flux on a surface then you'd need to model the beam in 2 or 3D. As an approximation, and assuming there was negligble thermal gradient through the thickness, then the body heat flux would the be the heat flux multiplied by the surface area that the surface heat flux was applied to divided by the whole volume.
