OSHA 1,000 lbs requirement on bar grating

OSHA 1,000 lbs requirement on bar grating

(OP)
Is there any guidance on how to apply the 1,000 lbs. concentrated load required in OSHA 1910.24c on bar grating? Does the 1,000 lbs. have to be applied on a single bar? or can it be spread over 2 or 3 bars?

RE: OSHA 1,000 lbs requirement on bar grating

If I remember right, the bar grating people figure the "concentrated load" in their tables as a line load over 12" width.
I believe in the IBC building codes, possibly ASCE 7, they define a "concentrated load" as being over a 30" square area, which is more likely how OSHA would interpret it.

ASCE section 4.3. 2'-6" square area as JStephen says.

RE: OSHA 1,000 lbs requirement on bar grating

I was originally thinking that five guys weigh around 1000#, and can only occupy five bars at any one time, so five bars should be OK, especially if they are spaced at 6" on center.

Bunch o' drunks if they need 5 bars. I barely make it to the second before I'm good for the night. ;)
