(OP)
This is somehow related to my problem regarding an error when trying to design a flexible routing part (http://www.eng-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=363377).
Same error here but without routing involved.
I'm trying to design a deformable part where the shape of the deformable features is controlled by constraints between the features and components in the part.
Please see the whole process in this video http://www.screencast.com/t/QzWo54RKQ2.

In an example part I have two disks (components) connected by a tube (feature). The tube and it's guide line are defined deformable. When the example part is added to a top level assembly a deformation feature is created automatically and I encounter an error. Deforming the part manually produces the same error.

The syslog file shows a similar error as in the other case when trying to create a flexible routing part: "+++ tag 51493 is not of class class UGS::WireFrame::Curve but is a UGS::POINT"
