HSS Hip Connection

HSS Hip Connection

HSS Hip Connection

(OP)
I'm looking for any ideas on the best way to connect the hip beam on the inside of this connection (the beam that goes up to the ridge).

Ignore for the moment that the perimeter beams are have a very odd connection to the column. Or comment on this as well if you have a better idea. Really the idea is to hide the bolts as this is all exposed.

The hip beam is pin connected to the inside all though I could do a more fixed connection, either is ok. I'm wondering if it might be better to frame the HSS over top.

Details are pretty preliminary at this point, so really just looking for a general idea.

Thanks!

RE: HSS Hip Connection

You again! :P

Wow, that's a janky connection. Architect went a little nuts, huh?

I'd actually say you would be better served by running a beam at a 45° angle to the N/S and E/W beams (perpindicular to the hip beam) and support it's end reaction on that. A small angle or something could fill the gap where the hip beam was. Should make the connection much more manageable.

I would look at running the hip continuous over the top of the col. location. I would put a horiz. cap pl. on the col. a few inches below the bot. of the two main beams, so as to clear the hip beam too. Then, I would fab. some crazy seat/transition on the underside of the hip beam to fit to the col. cap pl. and pick up the two perpendicular main beams. This requires some serious study as regards exact shape, end cap pls. to pick up the two beams, and much more info than you’ve given here; some real layout and inagineering. This seat structure would all be shop welded to the hip beam and the top of its bot. pl. (horiz.) might actually form a seat for the two perpendicular main beams, and then mate up with the col.
