Profile of a Surface Controlling a Boss Not Allowed?
Profile of a Surface Controlling a Boss Not Allowed?
(OP)
So I'm told that Profile of a Surface cannot control the boss on the surface in the image attached because the boss does not extend the full length of the face being controlled. Is that true? Instead, I'm told that size and position must be used to control the boss. Would the all over symbol be applicable here assuming the above is true (I'm guessing not because we're not controlling all around, just the profile).
So to be clear, we're talking about the profile tolerance that controls the profile from PA to PD. The true position and size dimensions on the boss on the top projected view are the correct way to control that feature I'm told.
Anyway, any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks.

pmarc - I agree. I do not personally find it to be ambiguous however, but if one designer / engineer can be confused by it, certainly there are others who will be as well... and probably even more machinists.
I'm keeping it the way it is in the drawings because the boss says that's the 'best' way... Fine, whatever. Good to know however that my line of thinking wasn't flawed... Can be improved though of course.
Thank you guys.
