Branch route lines from utility header piperack

Branch route lines from utility header piperack

Hi,

I have to re-route a coolingwater line from a header pipe 12".

Current situation:

2" pipe, branch connection is located at the bottom of the header.

New situation:
3" pipe, same route but the process engineer wants the branch connection on the top of the header.

I know that steam lines are normaly located on the top of the header, but I don't know the basic design rules about a cooling water branch line. for example: < 2" on the top because of plugging and >2" on the bottom?

Thanks in advance,

RE: Branch route lines from utility header piperack

If you think about what is inside a cooling water header then you will know why you should route all CW (supply and return) lines off the top of the header.

prognosis: Lead or Lag

You are right but it is a close system. Im just looking for a design code...

RE: Branch route lines from utility header piperack

ASME is [mostly] to prevent significant disasters. Engineers are still required to be competent in designing a system that will perform well with their specific fluid and operating conditions.

The only things that ought to come off the bottom of a header are condensate and drains. And we know this because of many, many times somebody built something the easy way and created a system that regularly plugs up and/or 'eats' pumps.
