Choose the ends of a small valve

Choose the ends of a small valve

Choose the ends of a small valve

(OP)
Good afternoon,

I'm busy with some small modifications on existing pipelines designed according ASME.
1 of them contains the installation of a small valve <1" as drain on a Flare line.
The process engineer wants a flanged valve but the current pipe spec tells me to install a SW valve.

Is there any reference to an ASME code "rule" that you can choose the right end by fluid code/pressure/temperature?

It is a modification so why don't deviate the pipe spec, if it's off course acceptable.

Kind Regards,

Ruud

Off course the pipe spec tells also to use forged valves (with SW ends) till 2" when is it allowed to use casting body's for smaller valves?

RE: Choose the ends of a small valve

Well, flanged valves are used on gas lines operating at much higher pressures than you would typically see in a flare line, so ASME is not likely to be fussed about that. Weld end or SW are quite often specified though to eliminate a possible source of leakage through a screwed or gasketted joint.
To deviate from the piping spec you would need to revisit the philosophy behind it, so probably just easier to install a valve with SW ends.
Cheers,
John
