ferrite inclusion test

(OP)
Dear all

We are responsible for a pressure vessel with inconel625 overlay and C.S base metal.

our main client has requested from us to perform ferrite inclusion test after machining.

would you please explaine what is ferrite inclusion test and why it is needed for cladded productions.

RE: ferrite inclusion test

It is unclear as to what your client has recommended based on what you have stated. Rather than guess or provide you incorrect information, I would suggest you request from the client what they require for testing. In most cases, the test requirement is to ensure the corrosion resistant weld overlay chemical composition falls within the range of 625 and does not have significant base metal dilution.

RE: ferrite inclusion test

Typically it isn't a ferrite test, but analysis of the Fe levels in the overlay. At Metengr said, to assure that you are still within the allowed chemistry and will have the desired corrosion resistance.

RE: ferrite inclusion test

What is meant by "after machining"? If it refers to examination of the clad surface portion which is removed prior to making the carbon steel strength weld, the test is done to preclude dilution of the deposited weld metal with the 625 alloy cladding and thus mitigate the [potential for cracking. This test will completely etch of the carbon steel with no bright, unetched spots of alloy 625 to confirm removal.
