Dear Friends,

as per the drilling details, the grooves shoould be on tube side but one side of the tubesheet we groved on the shell side.please advise the soltion regarding the groove location.

RE: grooving on tube sheet for expansion

You lost me and probably several other potential responders on the description.

RE: grooving on tube sheet for expansion

I think we are missing a sketch but, in refinery service (TEMA R) there are typically three grooves for tube expansion: two near tube side face of the tubesheet and a third one near the shell side face of the tubesheet.

TEMA specifies that for a design pressure over 2 MPa and/or a temperature exceeding 177 ْC, all tubesheet holes must be machined with at least two grooves each approximately 3.175 mm wide and 0.397 mm in depth

RE: grooving on tube sheet for expansion

Beyond TEMA, metallurgy and high pressure have lead to having a groove in the cladding of the shellside of a tubesheet. That is seen as a less expensive alternative to all alloy tubesheets, double tubesheets, and alloy sealwelded tube hole sleeve inserts. This is because tube rolling limitation and process cycling may not allow an adequate seal by tube-to-tubesheet expansion rolling. Seal welding tubes from the shellside is not unheard of, but that is expensive and does not permit retubing without full bundle replacement.
