Back Modulus

Back Modulus

(OP)
I am going to run a test that references an old specification calling out a method called a back modulus. If possible, I would like a history lesson on the reason for the unloading and reloading. I understand they are trying provide a method to be used when a material does not exhibit a well defined linear portion of the stress strain curve but It seems like a secant modulus would be the preferred method for materials such as this. To make it worse the specification is vague in their descriptions and instructions. Does anyone has more extensive information.ion on the subject?

Thanks
