Remeshing an orphan mesh

Remeshing an orphan mesh

Remeshing an orphan mesh

(OP)
Hi,

im trying to perform a plastic deformation simulation with Abaqus/Standard. (its a simple compressiontest).
It runs fine for the most part but near the end the deformations apparently become too big and the analysis fails. Im using triangular elements which i read arent really suited for this case. So i want to remesh my model (to use quads) which sadly is an orphan model obtained via a CT scan.
Is there a way to remesh it? I found differing answers to this, so a definite guide to this is greatly appreciated :)

Thanks alot to anyone trying to help me!

I got my mesh from my tutor who herself told me obtained it by using an X-ray computed tomograph (its a model of bovine bone). Thats apparently why there is no geometry behind it. (i wrote this already, no offence :P)
That is why i cannot change the element type the usual way.

I am curious: How did your tutor manage to mesh a bunch of slices from a CT scan without first having a geometry? Something isn't right.

From what i saw she had the raw data of the scan at her computer and a different program to view it. (unrelated to Abaqus)
This program as well has an export function to generate a abaqus mesh out of its data. Apparently no geometry is exported. (i got the cae file as is)

RE: Remeshing an orphan mesh

As far as I know, that is not possible. What I know is possible is that you can make a geometry out of CT scans using Mimics, Simpleware (and perhaps 3DSlicer and 3D-Doctor?) and then mesh the geometry using Mimics, Simpleware, IAFeMesh, Hypermesh, Abaqus/CAE, etc.

By the way, read the FAQs; you are going to have to help yourself with your homework.

its not homework its a thesis.
guess i just ask her though i wonder why she would give me a model without geometry.

"She saved you time by giving you a mesh instead of a geometry, which you would've had to mesh yourself. "

yeah, no. If i had had a geometry i would already be further now beause the orphan mesh is holding me back right now. She btw used mimic to obtain the model and said it is very unlikely she is able to get the geometry due to the complexcity of the geometry.
Do you have anything to say ontopic? Else please refrain from posting in this thread if you cannot give advice on topic.

Question still stands:
Is it possible to obtain the geometry of an orphan mesh or is there a way to remesh it?

Thank you for any on topic advice or relevant info.

RE: Remeshing an orphan mesh

You can't mesh something from CT scans without going through the intermediate step of making a geometry. Period!

Here are your options:

a) Use Mimics to import CT scans and create the geometry.
b) Use SolidWorks to import CT scans at known distances, create planes at those known distances along the length of a 3D spline, scale the images in each of the planes, and finally, use the loft feature to create the 3D geometry.
c) Simulia offers a plug-in to convert an orphan mesh in to a geometry but you have to pay for it.
d) Write your own script and fit triangles on the outer surface of the bone.

Drop the attitude, please. This is a professional forum.

Thank you, finally an ontopic post. This is indeed a professional forum but some of your posts were simply spam.
Guess I'll have to write my own script then, hopefully my tutor will be able to make a geometry though. The options were very helpful, thanks.
