thread292-294371: Weld metal tickness range qualified for ASME IX procedures
Gentlemen, I thought I had a pretty good handle on this area of welders certs. Would some one please SEE 2013 Sec 1X Interpretation:1X-10-23
and explain why a welder gets 2t coupon thickness limit (for weld metal deposited) when he only deposited the root and hot-pass using 6010. Then same welder gets only 2t weld metal thickness for the 7018. I see it refers QW 452.1 but that makes it more confusing to me. Thank you in advance.

RE: ASME welder thickness. limits

weld7777,
Do not have access to that interpretation but this is my understanding.
Different F numbers so each thickness is measured separately,
Cheers,
DD

DD thanks,
here it is, in entire form,
Background: A welder tests on a NPS 6 Sch80 .432 wall coupon, depositing .100 in of 6010 and the balance of .332 using 7018.

Question 1, Using 6010, is the welder qualified to deposit .864 in Maximum of weld metal? 864 = 2T
Reply was: yes

Question 2. Using 7018 is the welder qualified to deposit .644 in weld metal. 644 = 2t
Reply was Yes.

Question 3. Is the welder qualified to deposit .864 in. of weld metal using 6010 plus .664 in. of 7018 weld metal for a deposit of 1.528 in the same groove.
Reply was: no See QW 452.1 (b)

Thanks again in advance.

RE: ASME welder thickness. limits

The welder is limited in weld deposit thickness to 0.864" total using the SMAW process. If weld rod of similar F-numbers are used, how they achieve the total of 0.864" is what is being interpreted above.

DD- Metengr,

Thank you,
I think then that Question #1 (6010) should be limited to .200 max. That would make sense. Question #2 7018 limited to .664.

Total weld metal welder is qualified for is .864 using BOTH F numbers. I appreciated all the things you folks do on here.

RE: ASME welder thickness. limits

With the exception of the open root deposit made with F3 electrode, qualification with the F4 group electrode qualifies, F3, F2 and F1 electrodes with backing as well.
