Steel Beam Pocket Depth

Steel Beam Pocket Depth

Steel Beam Pocket Depth

(OP)
Is there a code required minimum depth for a steel beam pocketed into masonry (US Codes)? Obviously bearing has to work - but is there a min? I heard another engineer say today that there is a 6" min. requirement by code.

RE: Steel Beam Pocket Depth

Don't know, but beware situations with long "string" of beams with last one at end bearing on masonry, especially wall in line with beams - thermal movement

The definition of a structural engineer: overdesign by a factor of 1.999, instead of the usual 2.
