thread725-238462: welding procedure qualification (thickness range)
referring back to this thread in regard to thickness i have a welder qualified on a two process pqr and another who is not - gtaw for root/hot pass
i was reffring to qw451 in my answer to the project manager with the proviso that furher info is req'd.
question is, can i use the gtaw only welder on the two process butt (its a 900dn) for the root and hotpass only, then wait till i get the other qualified welder back on the job to finish the butt. thickness qualified to was 5.54mm and 900 butt is 12.97.
i have also looked at qw356 and qw452.1b which seems to indicate that i can use the wedler only qualified to the gtaw process for 11.66 (or the first 3 runs on this butt)
thanks

RE: thickness range revisited

verdiblue,
Your interpretation is correct (qualified weld metal thickness would however be 11.08 mm, not 11.66 mm).
Refer also QW 351 (paragraphs 3 & 4)

DD
