Bolt Hole Diameter Versus Anchor Bolt Diameter for Lug Supported Vessels

Bolt Hole Diameter Versus Anchor Bolt Diameter for Lug Supported Vessels

Bolt Hole Diameter Versus Anchor Bolt Diameter for Lug Supported Vessels

(OP)
Hello all,

I am reviewing a vertical vessel drawing with four support lugs. The drawing specifies to use 1" diameter bolts with a 11/8" anchor bolt diameter and I wanted some feedback if this is reasonable. Is there a standard table of bolt hole diameters for particular bolt sizes used in a lug supported vertical vessel in the ASME BPVC? Or is this more of a standard set from company to company? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Better to have a larger clearance hole, say 1 3/8, then supply a loose square washer 1 1/8 x 3/8 thick for field welding.

For standard anchor bolt chairs (chairs for uplift, not support of vessel), Megyesy's handbook shows holes 1/4" larger than the bolt size. Too small, and you run into tolerance issues, too large, and the nuts could be pulled through the holes.

Thank you tankman64 and JStephen for the feedback. I will take this into consideration and look into the details of Magyesy's Pressure Vessel Handbook.
