question about update wave-geometry

question about update wave-geometry

question about update wave-geometry

(OP)
Hi

I have a question about how update is triggered.

exmpl no.1:

A single part named "def.prt" containing a datum csys and a datumplane placed 100mm at distance in X direction (or other geo)
this datum is copied via "WAVE" > "Copy to Geometry to Part" to another part named "geo.prt".

When I edited the datumplane in "def.prt" , and then go back to my "geo.prt" , I need to "Update for external Change",before my datum is updated to a new distance.
Is that working as desigend ?

exmpl no.2: If I apply the above 2 parts in a assembly - same level ,the datumplane is updated immediately when edited in the "def.prt" .

Should "def.prt"+"def.prt" part be put in an assembly, if immediately update is wanted ?

RE: question about update wave-geometry

First off, what version of NX are you using? I ask because over the years we've made changes to how you can force WAVE links to update and while it is true that 'Update for External Change' will ALWAYS work, it's often overkill, like swatting flies with a sledgehammer, the flies are dead but the furniture is in shambles.

Anyway...

Having an assembly where they are both included is not needed.

If you wish to always have immediate updates, try setting your 'Assembly Load Options' so that the 'Load Interpart Data' option is toggled ON and the 'Load Parents' is set to 'All Levels', but again this can a bit of overkill as well.

Hi John -

Thank's for your quick answer . My NX ver. = 8.5.1.xx .

The setting's you mention ,am I always aware about, and they are set as you suggest in this case.

But in the meantime , I have tried the same example in a NX 8.0 Version , and now it work's. (as I and you expected it should).

But NOT in NX 8.5.1.xx .

Can I get you to do a very simple test in NX 8.5.1.xx ? of cource -only if you have the time for it....

RE: question about update wave-geometry

Can you provide an example which works in NX 8.0 but not NX 8.5 so that when I test this we know we're dealing with a relevant case?

hi John -

It is not possible for me to public prt files form my site SPW ( law ).

I have done a avi file (60mb) recorded in NX , which show the problem.
But I cant upload it - I dont know why.

I have tried in avi and zip format.
I will return ,if I can get it possible for me to public a prt.
----------------------------------------------------------------
But I dont think it is possible in NX8.5.1.3 to :

create new part "def"
create datumplane dist = X100
wave - copy geometry to new part "geo" - select datum located at X100
open "geo" part and just verify linked datum
go back to "def" part and edit datúmplane located at X100 to new value X0
go back to "geo" part
linked datum is not updated to new position

Works 100% in NX8 and NX9

RE: question about update wave-geometry

Have you opened a PR for this? Since this works in NX 9.0, unless GTAC gets a large number of PR's on this item against NX 8.5, there may be no plans to back-port a fix to NX 8.5. After all, NX 9.0 is now the supported version of NX so officially the problem has been resolved.

RE: question about update wave-geometry

Try updating NX to the latest MR (8.5.3).

hi to both of you.

Thanks for your comment's . The 8.5.3 is also problematic in this case.

But I will look forward to the day we implement NX 9 .

RE: question about update wave-geometry

Are both the parts fully loaded in session? Perhaps a "delayed update" option is turned on?

I'm currently working with some links in a somewhat similar situation (NX 8.5.3), but I do not have to use the "update for external change" command. The links update instantly and automatically.

hi cowski -

In my case I have 2 parts without being components in a assembly.

Is that similar your case ?

If I add the 2 parts as components in an assembly - the update is triggered immediately = OK

RE: question about update wave-geometry

I'm working on a lid with an overmolded "gasket"; I added the lid as a component to the gasket file and wave-linked a copy of the lid body to help define the gasket. As long as I have both parts open in session, whenever I update the lid geometry, the gasket automatically updates to match.

hi -

Now I understand you are a Little confused about my case . Me too ,now !!

I have just tried to reproduce the case on my local course laptop , also NX 8.5.3.3 , everything is fine.

But in our production environment (also NX 8.5.3.3) it will not be done as expected.(as mentioned in my first question yesterday).

Load Interparts + All levels + No delay in both case.
