(OP)
If the MODs want to close or delete this thread I understand since its not a direct discussion of GD&T etc.

What I’m posting this for is to ask the community to consider sending tec-ease.com a polite email asking them to reverse their new policy requiring premium membership. Personally, I have no problem with their decision if that’s what they really want to do but I don’t see myself paying for a premium membership just to access GDT tips during the moment when I need to reference them. I think in the long run it will hurt their interests because new students and professionals will just move on to a local premium resource in their area, whereas they would otherwise remember a well used free resource for continuing training and recommendation’s to their employers training programs. There are lots of business models for companies to decide upon, but that’s just my opinion... its been a steady bookmark in my browser for years. I think it might make a difference if the community took a simple moment to send them an email, with so many links referenced in this forum it’s my impression it’s one of the most used free resources. Its been a valuable resource for me over the years, sad to see it go otherwise.

Dear Tec-ease.com

I am writing to ask you reverse your premium membership requirement for your GD&T tips. Your tips have been a valuable resource over the years. The free GDT tips were a huge resource for students and upcoming professionals that will remember where the tips came from when they decide to invest in further training and education.

Best Regards,

RE: tec-ease.com GDT tips

For the amount of money I spent on different reference materials I could buy T-e tips to last 'til retirement. But why?

Dear Tec-ease.com

So long and thanks for all the fish.

RE: tec-ease.com GDT tips

Anyone think a person could adequately prepare for the GDTP using that site?

RE: tec-ease.com GDT tips

I don't think so.

The main source is the Y14.5M-1994 standard.
The body of knowledge upon which the GDTP examination is based can be found in ASME Y14.5.2-2000, or for free in the brochure under this link:

RE: tec-ease.com GDT tips

Yeah, I've looked through the brochure... I'm not really sure what they're charging money for over there at tec-ease... 3 minute video tutorials? Come on... And their prices are terrible. $800 for their software trainer. Meanwhile, the best way to study, I've heard is by doing something called the linear method. Not sure what that is, but I'm guessing that reading the 2009 version of the spec from cover to cover will do a lot to prepare me for the 2009 version of the cert. when it comes out.

RE: tec-ease.com GDT tips

Modulus,

If you are considering paid online sources, check out Drafting Zone (no, I don't work there smile)

You can get 1 year access to all their materials and take practice exams.

Definitely costs less than tec-ease. Unfortunately, as I mentioned several times, the place is pretty much pre-2009.

RE: tec-ease.com GDT tips

Thanks, CheckerHater... I will use that site to some degree I'm sure.

RE: tec-ease.com GDT tips

Tec-Ease provided free tips by email for years. Then they stopped that and provided free tips with on-line videos (not in writing anymore). Now they are getting rid of the "free" part of the videos. In the interest of promoting the GD&T standards and GD&T usage for the public good they should go back to doing the emails for free! Nobody's boss is going to pay for a subscription when he had to shell out $130 a pop for the standard!

Well, it's already $185 everywhere, but Tec-ease wants $195 for it. I think there is a word for that.

Might that be "handling fee"?

RE: tec-ease.com GDT tips

I don't think so.
According to Federal Trades Commission shipping and handling costs should be disclosed "clearly and conspicuously"

RE: tec-ease.com GDT tips

It's just a mark-up; anyone can do it. If someone's too lazy to shop around for a good price, I'll gladly sell them a fresh copy of the 2009 standard for $450. Hey, no handling fees! Just a markup for your ineptitude....

RE: tec-ease.com GDT tips

Well, seeing how ASME member dues fund so much of the standards development, I think that members should get a steep discount!

RE: tec-ease.com GDT tips

Why is everyone so upset about tec ease charging for this stuff now? Is there someone else out there who has been providing free tips on the scale that Don has, for over 10 years, that I just don't know about. As far as I'm concerned, he could have been charging for this long ago. As far as the training software goes, check out others and see where his prices are relative to them.

I really don't get all the anger over this.

not upset or angry on my part, just dissapointed. Like I said in my OP I have no problem if that's what they really want to do its their business.

RE: tec-ease.com GDT tips

Nobody is angry or blaming Don personally for that decision.

It's just hard to believe, that current demand for GD&T training is so high, one can charge arm and leg for it.
When forced to do comparison shopping, people may actually go elsewhere.

It would be sad to lose yet another place to look for ideas. sad
